Just Don't Burn Dinner

7 Quick Takes, vol. 1 (Procrastinator’s Edition, part 1 of many) January 7, 2013

Just close your eyes and pretend it’s Friday.

1. I have this dry spot on one of my knuckles that keeps cracking open, and it hurts like a mofo. Someone tell me how the heck to get rid of it! My little sister gave me some cocoa butter, so I’ve been slapping a glob on the dry spot whenever I remember to, with a bandaid on it so the glob doesn’t fall off. Is there anything else I should/shouldn’t be doing?

2. Speaking of bandaids, am I the only one who’s obsessed with getting all the funky designs? I’m beginning to get quite the collection!

3. I was still on my crazy holiday schedule at work, so all I made this past week was candied ginger. I was a little nervous, but it came out great! I’ll do a full post this coming week, but here’s a little preview:

4. Keep praying for Jen!

5. It’s been less than a week of 2013, and I haven’t even started on at least 80% of my New Year’s goals. Bleh.

6. I like this blog theme, but I could live without the giant picture of kissing birds at the top. Anyone know how to get rid of them? UPDATE: I changed it. I couldn’t handle the mush. :)

7. This song has taken over my life. I blame Dwija. :)

Happy New Year! January 1, 2013

Happy 2013, everyone! Hope you all aren’t too hung over from partying last night. ;) Mom and I rang in the new year by watching “I, Robot”, drinking hot chocolate, and eating buñuelos, which are a traditional Mexican holiday dessert made out of fried flour tortillas coated in cinnamon sugar. So good! Then we went to Mass this morning at our beautiful parish. Not a bad way to start off 2013, if you ask me. :)

I’ve never been a huge fan of New Year’s resolutions, but everyone’s doing all these cool posts about how they met their goals from last year, and I’m a little jealous! ;) So here are some of my goals for 2013, in no particular order:

1. Blog at least once a week, aside from 7 Quick Takes and What I Wore Sunday type posts. I had another blog before this one, and it died. Mainly because I never posted anything in there. Oops. I’m shooting for posting at least 3 times a week, but we’ll see.
2. Exercise at least 30 minutes, 3 times a week. This will be a vast improvement from the amount I currently work out, which is exactly never.
3. Learn to cook. Or: the entire purpose of this blog! I really want to know how to make more than fideo and scrambled eggs by the time 2014 rolls around.
4. Pray at least Lauds and Vespers every day.
5. Re-read all the books I own. Or, just read more in general. I’m shooting for at least 2 books a month.
6. Learn to sew my own clothes. This has been a goal of mine for years, but it keeps getting shoved aside. Not this year! I fully expect to get my call to be on Project Runway by the end of the year…not. :/
7. Start attending daily Mass again. I used to go every single day before I moved, but sleep wins a lot of the time. Okay. All of the time.
8. Socialize more. I am NOT an introvert, but I have yet to make any friends good enough to hang out with outside of work. That’s got to change!
9. Catch up on my Read the Catechism emails, and stay caught up!
10. Do more embroidery and drink more tea. Preferably at the same time. :)

Here’s to a happy New Year’s day, and a blessed, grace-filled 2013!

Well, Hi There! December 24, 2012

“I want to start a food blog, but my cooking skills, er, need work.”

I tweeted this on Monday; it was such a ridiculous idea that I couldn’t keep it to myself. When I think of a food blog, I think of people with clean, spacious kitchens who take non-blurry pictures and who know what the word “braise” mean. In other words, not me. So there I was, quite pleased with my ridiculous tweet, when a couple of friends said hey, it would be fun to see you learn as you go! I gave it some thought, and since the world didn’t end yesterday, I’m starting my very own learning-to-cook, hey-watch-me-periodically-burn-stuff food blog.

I can cook very basic things, like spaghetti, and eggs, and…yeah, that’s about it. I really want to change that, and be a super cook like my mom and little sister.

So if you rock at making dinner from a box, but the sight of raw meat makes you sweat, or if you freak out if a recipe has more than 6 ingredients, or if you fly into a rage when the author of a recipe says, “There are so many variations; just use your imagination!” and you think, “I DON’T WANT TO USE MY IMAGINATION, THAT’S WHY I’M USING A RECIPE!!!!!!” then you, my friend, are a kindred spirit, and this blog is for you.

Now, I’m trying to hold myself accountable, so even if I totally screw something up, I’m still going to post about it, so you can at least learn from my mistakes (or tell me how to fix it next time ;) ). And I won’t always post about food. I have a life, y’know. :)

Wish me luck!
